The music department is very excited to announce that Senior Tanner Stephens has been selected to be a part of the ILMEA All-State Vocal Jazz Ensemble. This ensemble will meet in Peoria, Illinois on January 25 & 26, 2018 during the Illinois Music Educator Conference (IMEC). They will be under the direction of Corey F. Jones and will preform on Friday, January 26, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. at the Peoria Civic Center Theater.
In October, Tanner auditioned for this opportunity after preparing for several weeks. Students are asked to learn their part for two songs as well as the chromatic and blues scales. During the audition process, students are asked to sing a sectional from both songs along with the scales, sight read a jazz except and improvise against a track.
After being selected at the district level, Tanner attended the ILMEA District 4 Jazz Festival held at Jacksonville High School in Jacksonville, Illinois in November. After this festival, selections were made at the state level for all state ensembles. Tanner's score qualified him to be a part of the All-State Vocal Jazz Ensemble. From our ILMEA District, only five students are selected to be a part of vocal jazz ensembles at the state level.
The Illinois Music Educators Associate (ILMEA) is a state wide organization made up for music educators in all areas including elementary, band, choir, orchestra, and jazz. The ILMEA has nine different districts across the state. A-C Central is a part of District 4. During one school year, tens of thousands of students will prepare and audition for district and state festivals. Only the best scores are chosen for district events. Then only Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors are eligible to be selected by their scores to perform at state. Tanner will be the first student from A-C Central High School to participate at the state level in Vocal Jazz.
